xp home

this may be a silly question, but need to ask.

I have my old laptop that came with xp home installed and the key sticker on the bottom, it has sence failed to the point that it is unrepairable and is disgarded.

just so the good key is not wasted, can I use a retail xp home cd to install on a new build and use the key from the laptop xp home ?

thanks
bob

I'm not 100% certain, bailey, but I don't think you can use it. Most laptops (or any prebuilt for that matter) come with an OEM copy pre-installed on the hard drive, and it's generally tied to THAT computer. By using the retail copy to install the program, that doesn't make it "retail", because you'll still be using the OEM key that's tied to the old OEM version that was on the laptop. Maybe somebody else knows different, but I don't think it would be able to be used.

Your XP that came with your laptop is tied into the bios I do believe.. Besides a OEM key will not work with a retail version of XP I have tried in the past but no go...
