Help!
I'm getting a black screen after the windows logo. I try booting in safe mode, but it just goes into a black screen with the 4 "safe mode" words at the corners and I can't do anything in it. I can still see my mouse on the screen. No sound whatsoever.
This happened after I tried connecting a new monitor. This problem remains even after connecting my old monitor. I have no idea what the problem can be. Video card? OS? I appreciate your help. Update: I just repaired the OS and it's still the same. I have a 8600GT video card and my new monitor is a Samsung 2253BW. Last edited by inmylrg; 09-10-2008 at 11:19 PM. |

Try doing a "system restore" to a time before the problem occurred. Start, programs, accessories, system tools, system restore...

I can't do that. All I have is a black screen. The only thing I can do is booting the XP disc and running the restore console.

Do a repair reinstall.
Repair Reinstallation of Windows XP (using XP CD) I assume you have tried VGA mode and last known good config on the boot screen? |

I tried that twice already, no use. I've tried last known good config, that didn't work either. I haven't try VGA mode yet, so I'll try that. I'm running chkdsk right now to repair something since it found some errors, hopefully that is the problem. What else can it be? Thanks for your help.

Did you swap the monitors while the pc was turned on?

I turned it off first. I did noticed that it was doing an automatic update while it was shutting down though. I have no idea what update it was.
I already tried repairing my OS three times. Manually restoring the computer to a previous point with the recovery console. Still, no luck. I'm planning to just reinstall a fresh copy of Windows, but before that I need to transfer my files from my HD first. |

Did you try a repair REINSTALL as indicated in that thread?

None of that worked. Is there a way I can install a driver from the recovery console?
