windows Homeserver
Hello all
I'm thinking about setting up a Windows Home server. I'm currently using www.1and1.com for my website. I'm a little new to this territory but would like to end up creating a site and hosting it myself on my home server. I just hate the website builder 1and1 has and I know if I use a dedicated web building program and host it I could do much better. 1. is this possible. 2. If so what steps would need to take place. I think I would still need to pay for a registered domain name. or are there free ones. I have this picture in my head where I set my site up the way I want. Get my server set to a domain and publish my site . Am I way off , I feel like I'm missing a lot. Any detailed information would be greatly appreciated. Iv been a long time member to this site and learned most of my PC building skills here. This is my first attempt to setup a server.

Not worth the hassle. Move your hosting to a host that lets you use whatever tools you want and upload with standard FTP. If you already have a domain name, it's a very easy move.
I use surpasshosting.com. 60 bucks a year gets you 200gb space and 2000gb bandwidth. |

Your ISP might frown on you have a server if you end up getting a lot of traffic.

Decent hosting is a lot cheaper and less hassles than securing your own server.

OK great
But lets say there was a way to make your connection secure ( witch there are plenty ways of doing. ) The automatic backup of any computer on your network alone is well worth the work to keep a home server up and running. You can create log ins for family and share files , photos and videos with them. It looks like an easy way to share your digital life with your family. For one to just say its not secure so don't try it seems a little far fetched and short. Thanks Chris |

An appliance like that or Windows Home Server is ideal for LAN file sharing and backup.
