How Can I Install XP MC & get all Windows Updates WITHOUT SP3?

I reformatted and reinstalled XP MCE 2005 a couple of weeks ago but have had some problems right from the start. I mentioned one of them in another thread (thanks to Force Flow for the advice) but there have been a couple of other problems since then and I'm considering reformatting and reinstalling XP.

I suspect that all the components of SP2 are not installed on my system and I hope someone can explain this to me: Immediately after the XP installation, I went to WU.

There was only ONE update (other than the validation tool) installed before SP3:

Can this be right?? Shouldn't there have been other updates available before SP3 for me to install? My copy of XP MCE was purchased a year and a half ago. I have XP MCE 2005 version # 5.1.2700.2180.

Aside from my problem trying to install WMP 11 because XP Rollup 2 was not detected, my Sansa MP3 player was not recognized in My Computer (I had to install a separate file to get that working properly), and now I cannot install an update for XP Rollup 2 even after following the tips given in this thread.

I still have a clean installation of XP but something doesn't seem right here. I have not changed any hardware and there were no such problems with WU or any of my periferals being recognized before reformatting. It's as if there are some components of Windows that are missing.

I still have a fairly clean install. I'm thinking about reformatting/reinstalling XP, but only if I can make sure WU is done thoroughly and properly. I don't understand how WU can take me directly to SP3 without detecting any other updates. Is there a way to install XP and make sure Rollup 2 and all other updates are fully installed BEFORE SP3?

Thanks in advance

Alright, I did some more Googling and found this Media Center Indent Tool.

My copy of XP does not have Rollup 2 installed. If I set the Indent Tool to Auto Detect it will stay at version 3.0. I still cannot install all Windows updates at that setting. I set the Indent Tool to 4.0 and was able to install all the updates.

This still seems like too much work for something that should be pretty straightforward if Windows is installed properly. What in the world has Microsoft done with their updates since the release of SP3??

Media Center is a bit of a strange animal.

Admin note - please do not post large inline images. I converted yours to links. We prefer links or thumbnails only. Thank you.

Sorry about that. I was going to post the images by managing attachments but then they would all be at the bottom of my post.

No problem - if you are going to post stuff from Imageshack, etc., just post the link, don't use the IMG tags. Attachments have a 100kb limit anyway, most images need to be resized to get under that limit.
