Maybe you have Windows Update set to automatically download and install updates without notification?

Is there a way to uninstall the windows update program then reinstall? Is it just in the add/remove?

SP3 can do some strange things to Windows Update. I nuked and paved a laptop the other day, installed XP with SP1a from a Dell reinstall CD (yes, it was a Dell laptop), then installed SP3 from my admin download. Windows Update ran fine, but it found no critical updates and only one optional - .NET 1.1. It didn't even find IE7. I manually installed IE7 and tried again - no dice. I then uninstalled SP3 without uninstalling IE7 and that totally broke IE, it wouldn't even start, it just stared at me.
So - nuked and paved again, this time I ran Windows Update immediately and it offered me SP2. I took it, then I ran it again and took IE7. Ran it again, took SP3. Ran it again, took all the criticals, and it's working fine. |

I had the same problem with the updates not showing. There is a way to force a reinstall of the update software but it didn't work at all for me. In the end I nuked as well and made sure that the first thing I tried was the SP3 install (I marked down the number of updates before doing so). After the SP3 install, the updater was broken again but I tried the force reinstall and it worked. All updates were there and I am back to getting updates when I should.

I dscovered something recently after doing an XP repair install. Did the repair with a slipstreamed SP2 disk and rather than going directly to the SP3 file, I jumped to Windows Update, clicked Custom and let it search. When SP3 was offered, I selected the show me other updates that are available option. The first update that ran, all by itself, was the new Update installer 3.1. Once that was installed, I went directly to my SP3 master file and did the upgrade. It seems the installer is the big issue to SP3. I now check in Add Remove Programs before going to Windows Update and if the new installer is listed, I've had no trouble adding SP3.
Oh, and I don't use Windows Update anymore once SP3 is installed. I've switched to Microsoft Update instead so the customer (and me!) gets all the updates for Office too. The bad guys have poked enough holes in MS Office over the years to make it necessary to keep Office updated too. Using MS Update over Windows Update saves going to Office Update as another step in optimizing a pc. |
