Have any of you seen this error message?

From time to time when I have gone into Acronis and hit the Recover button to restore my machine from the backup image, when the computer reboots and I'm placed at the desktop I see this error message:

"The system has recovered from a serious error."

Then below that there is an option to send the error info to Microsoft.

I have only noticed this message when I've hit the Recover button in Acronis, although you can see this error message in other ways also.

I went to the Microsoft site and printed off some info. Basically they said something like this error message happens because after a Minidump file is written, the paging file continues to have a flag set that indicates that a Minidump file must be written.

They suggest obtaining the latest service pack for XP. Their link says wxp_sp1. And I think the article said it was fixed with SP1. Well I'm using SP2 and I still get this message on occasion. But as I stated earlier, I've only noticed it when performing a recover operation in Acronis. They also discussed a workaround by going into the paging file and doing some changes there.

I was wondering if any of you have seen this error message on your screen.

I've seen "the system has recovered from a serious error" once or twice, but I don't use Acronis.

I'm always thinking, "Well, nice to hear you're feeling better !"

Can't tell if you're taking a survey or need help?

YES, I've seen this top five most common error on many computers over the years...

Oh and the mini dump file is created cause of the error..

You should probably consider re-installing Acronis's software and or look for a patch on their web site.

Much as I like Acronis True Image, I do not like or recommend the installation of Startup Recovery Manager and/or Secure Zone. This overwrites the MBR with proprietary code and can be troublesome like you are experiencing. I only recommend the use of this or any other imaging software in a "traditional" manner - creating and restoring images to/from a separate drive, preferably external. This non-standard MBR can cause serious issues if you ever have a real problem with your hard drive.

It's easy enough to restore an image from an external by booting with the CD. I also prefer this method to attempting to restore from in Windows. The only thing I'll do in Windows is mount and explore images to go after specific folders and files.

But you could list all of your hardware specs.
We don't have a crystal ball.
It may not have anything to do with the Acronis.

I don't use the Secure Zone. I use Acronis in a very simple, straightforward manner. I just follow the defaults and make a backup image of my C:\drive. Then when I want, I simply hit the Recover button. Done deal. It's very simple to use.

After doing some snooping on this error message, it appears millions of users have seen this exact same message. I believe it is related to a minidump file. It appears to be a bug within XP.

Funny though, on Microsoft's website they say the fix is to install SP1. It's an older article dated 2002 I think. I'm using XP SP2, and the error message still crops up on occasion.

I printed off some suggestions. Some though I'm not sure I would attempt. One suggestion was to disable virtual memory. Even though I have lots of RAM, I think disabling the paging file might be bad advice.

Another was to disable error reporting.

Another was to disable memory dumps.

Those seem more plausible and safe to try.

Many types of errors create a Mini Dump log file. These files contain valuable information to be used to try and figure out why you got the original error.

Anytime you can re-create an error by doing something like-> "gone into Acronis and hit the Recover button to restore my machine from the backup image" then you've greatly narrowed down where the problem is....[hint hint]

Yes, but where are you storing the image of the C drive?

The image of the drive is stored on a second internal drive. And I just started to copy those backup images to another external drive as well. Someone also suggested to me that this can happen when you try to recover the machine from within Windows. If you use the Recovery CD instead, the message does not show.

I've never used the Recovery CD so I wouldn't know. Think I'll have to try it.

I'm using the latest version of Acronis, so I feel confident it's not a buggy program. The only updates available for Acronis products are for older versions.

I did a memory test also. Memory is great. It really does point to this minidump file that has a flag that remains set that doesn't always get flushed out like it's supposed to.

I never try to restore images from in Windows. I always boot with the CD to do it. Old habit, and I have no reason whatsoever to do it any differently. I never clone drives in Windows either.
