Installing a service pack to xp that has no service packs installed.

Hey, Reinstalling XP to a friends computer and tried to go straight to installing SP3(from a burnt cd I've been using) but apparently this isn't possible because of the XP disk being an original XP disk with no service packs. Do I have to begin with installing SP1 or can I just jump to installing SP2. (Have never dealt with a version 1 XP install before!) Getting tnis box going so he can start using it for school in the morning. Thanks!

As far as I'm aware, you should be able to go directly to service pack 3. I believe it contains the full roll-up of everything contained in SP1 and 2. You could do this via windows update, although it's possible you'd have to download a certain amount of updates first. I'd download the full version of SP3 from Microsoft and install it manually once you have installed all device drivers.

Nope. For some reason, you can't go right from 0 to 3.

You SHOULD be able to go from 0 to 2, then you should go to Windows Update and get that caught up to where it shows you the 90 or so critical updates - then you can close out without downloading and installing those and install SP3 from the admin download (316mb).

Strange. I thought it might be the case that SP1 was needed first (I was able to go from 1-3 but I've never actually worked with a pre-SP1 disc), but it would seem not!

Yup...wouldn't of thunk either. Anyways...what I'd like to do is just burn to a CD/R and have the thing. Looking around and what would be the best/safest place to burn the ISO from. Microsoft seems to want you to do an update style of download and I'll be retrieving it on a Vista box. The non-SP Windows is configured to a dial up config. and just want to make it simple?

Am unsure what you mean about ISO. The full download of SP3 that I linked to is an executable file, as is the case with SP2 that it looks like you will need to download and install first:

Both *should* fit on a single CD-R - just burn them as data files to the disc.

The best and safest thing to do is take his CD and slipstream SP2 into it. That is *known* to work well. SP3 slipstreaming is still questionable.
