XP problem?
Guys,
I have not been here in a while. For the last few days I see the following problem: XP Professional is booting up normally, I enter my pw and the desktop populates with all the right icons. Then the windows hourglas comes on and never stops - none of the apps can be started, not even taskmanager. The only way to stop it is to shut off the on/off button. Looks almost like something got hung up..... Any Idea what can cause that? Your help is appreciated!

Bring up Task Manager and see if you can find the app that's running...
Would be interesting to see if unplugging the network cable makes any difference.

XP Problem?
EzyStvy,
Thanks for your reply! I tried to get up Task Manager - but I can't do anything - the darn hourglas is on and the only way to shut off is to hit the off button..... I do have all my data backed up - but it is a pain in the neck do re-install all apps. Should I try to do a XP repair from my install disk? hansmann |

Have you let it sit for an hour or so?
Did you make ANY type of change to the pc prior to this starting? Try unpluging the network cable to rule out if you're pc has been "owned" by some hacker/whacker. |

try safe mode
try booting into safe mode (press f8 when windows is loading). This should allow you to work. Try going into safe mode w/ networking and dling malwarebytes, sdfix, ccleaner, spybot, and avg antivirus run them. also go to start run msconfig and disable anything you think might be causeing the hangup, if your still having trouble download hijack this and paste the log.
hope this helps |
