Vert concerned about this alert message...
I have an AC'97 Audio chip and a few weeks ago, I decided to install an older SoundBlaster card into my computer, hopefully, for better sound. While I was in the BIOS, trying to disable the AC'97, the power went out. Storm winds, blew down power lines to our small town. Everything seemed okay when I booted up, but the next morning when I turned it on again, I got the following screen:
http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2006-8/1209601/c002.jpg As my USB keyboard was unable to do a screen capture at this point during power up, I had to take a photo of it with my digital camera. The screen appears after the Windows logo, but before the Welcome screen. I have no idea what it means, so I pressed " Cancel ". It did continue to load without incident. However, every second or third time I turn on the computer, the screen appears. Obviously, this does not want to go away. Can anyone explain what may have happened when the power went out? Perhaps a solution? Looks to me like you tried to install some software or drivers that came with the old Soundblaster. That's a no-no, XP has native drivers.

" Vert "!? Sorry, I'm usually paranoid about spelling. Shows how concerned I am.
glc, I never got a chance to install anything! I tried to disable the sound chip first, before installing the sound card. It was while I was in the bios, about to disable the chip, that the power went off. Something must have happened to bring up this screen, but I don't remember anything out of the ordinary. I'm just concerned about what I should do next. |

I'd try a system restore back to a date/time before this happened. It's not serious, just a bizarre annoyance.

Ahhh, there's the rub. Never thought much about using System Restore, until this happened. Found both System Restore and Help and Support were not working at all. Just got them working last week, with some help from guys like you. Guess I should have been learning, instead of playing.
There may be a silver lining to this. Last week, I tried to install SP3 several times, but with no success. I did have the foresight to set a restore date before I installed SP3. Each time it uninstalled the remnants SP3, the computer would run much slower. It got to a point, I decided to try the System Restore, and everything seems to work like before the install. That was several days ago and that alert screen has not returned, even though the restore point was well after the fact. Knock on wood! |
