Server 2003 Remote Connection

I am trying to establish a remote connection with a friends server (2003) from my home (win XP Pro).......and cannot seem to do it. I have his IP address and full computer name...but cannot do it. Is there something I need to set up on the server to allow me to do this? Can anyone direct me to a link that will walk me throught this step by step?

Thank you

What happens/doesn't happen when you try to connect?

Have you looked at the firewall settings on the server pc?

When I go to remote connection on my home PC, I tried to type in the full computer name and/or the ip address and it comes up with an error message saying that "remote desktop cannot find the remote computer" and to check with my administartor.......what should I look for on the firewall settings? I know other people(employees) are logging into the server remotely.

Thank you for your help and your patience...

The computer name won't work unless the other pc in on the same network as your machine.

Odds are you're using the wrong IP address.

If other people are successfully doing it, get the exact settings from one of them.

How do I get the right ip address? I right clicked on the local area connection icon in the right hand lower task bar, then went to status and then support - is this not the IP address for the server? Also, is this where I would put the IP address - in the place of computer name?

If the server is behind a router, that's the local IP, not the Internet IP. On the server, open a browser and go to www.whatismyip.com.
