cant start computer after sp3

oh my. A friend gave me his computer to fine tune and update. It only needed sp3 for Windows XP as far as updates.

Everything was running smoothy UNTIL the sp3 update. It asked to reboot and I rebooted.

Now I'm in big trouble. #1. It just keeps looping to the window asking if you want to start in normal mode, safe mode, ect. NONE of them work. It just keeps looping back to the same thing.

Safe mode gets stuck on mups.sys

That's it. Pretty much can't do anything.

BIOS doesn't give me many options. The advanced menu doesn't have anything in there and talks about something about me being in bios in user mode.

I just can't believe it can get this bad. This persons important data is on this machine and he has to print out some flyers that he made for something.

I had the very same problem with my 6 year old homebuilt pc. Was running Vista UE32. SP1. I ran Avast and Defender Thorough Scans. Shut down. Windows just kept Rebooting. Even in Safe Mode. It would only go to CRC.DLL. The PC ran fine with Vista UE for about a year.
Anyway. What I ended up doing is a Complete Reformat. And Reinstall. Execpt I put XP Pro back on. What I think happened is the OS got corrupted. You may have to do the same.
I was warned about not putting SP3 on when I reinstalled. So far mine is running fine with it.
