Windows XP Admionistrator
I'm working on my daughters computer now. Recently she had a virus. At times when whe would try to shut down the system a message would tell her another user was on the system. There should have been no other users except her. On further investigation and trying another virus scanner she found the virus and deleted it. However, the damage seems to have been done. When she tries to do some normally simple tasks she gets a message that the Administrator will not allow her to make the changes. One instance is that the display is a very low resolution with all test and icons very large. When she tries to adjust display settings she gets the administrator warning. This is her personal computer and she does not have multiple user accounts set up on it.
Is there any way to disable the Administrator? The machine runs on XP. The full message is Your system administrator disabled the display control panel. I also just noticed I can't find the Restore function. I thought maybe I could restore the system to a time prior to the virus. Last edited by StJoDennis; 10-20-2008 at 09:59 PM. |

Sounds like symptoms of Antivirus 2008, 2009, 2010. It travels with differing names. Best way to remove it is by downloading Malwarebytes and running a full system scan. If the download is blocked by the virus, download it on a clean machine and install it using a flash/thumb drive.

Thanks, Panama Red, for the tip about malware. I don't currently have the problem machine online so I did the thumb drive thing and was able to clean it up. I'm still checking for signs of the virus, but so far things look good.
Most of the other problems related to some strange setups in the User Profiles. I'm gradually getting them straightened out. Next, I have to try installing "Spore" on the computer for my grandson. The company wasn't quite as forthcoming as they could have been about the system requirements. Now he has the game, but we don't know if it will work on this system. |

Thanks for the Spore address. I had already looked there. Unfortunately, he hadn't, and the packaging from the store doesn't warn you off. I think his parents are looking to upgrade their computer for Christmas, so he should be able to run it then.
