.dat question not sure about this

Not sure I'm in the right place for this question ,but here goes...

The attachment shows a .dat file that looks like a media file.

I know that can't be right. I long time ago I changed a file and I think this is what I did by mistake, not sure. My question is

What does a .dat file icon look like? I need to change it back to it's original form.

thanks a lot

If you're running XP....

Open "my computer"

"Tools" > "folder options" > "File Types" tab

delete the entry/entries for the DAT extension.

Ultimately, it doesn't really matter what the file association is for dat files. They will still be read by the apps that use them.

You could click the Advance button and then the Change Icon button

Strangely, I don't see the "Advanced" button on their screen shot... nor do I have it on my dialog when I check out extension associations...

Well I managed to delete the Dat after a reboot. Now the Dat looks like a notepad and I'm able to see the file. Can you please show me what a stock .Dat looks like?

Thanks

There is no such thing as a "stock" .DAT file. They are used by many many different applications and take many many different forms. Not to be rude, but don't worry about what the icon looks like, there is no stock answer.

Yeah, my .dat files have been associated to the notepad icon for I don't know how long.....hasn't caused any problems. I never could find any other icon they went with so I figured what the heck, as long as they work, don't worry about it.
