installing Windows XP on a new laptop
I wish to install Windows XP on a new laptop(that I have not purchased yet). Can I use the CD ROM from my desktop computer? If I cannot do this, and I purchase it from Dell, will they send me windows X P if I am insistent? I do not like windows Vista and I want to get as much performance as I can out of my new laptop.

Dell Business section sells machines with XP...
Any OS cd key can only be used on One Machine.

Just get used to Vista. If you go through msconfig and take out stupid stuff from starting up, it's fine. I have my Vista laptop at about 480MB ram usage on boot. Performance is great with SP1.

Select Dell laptops are available with a XP "downgrade". Doing it any other way will result in licensing and driver hassles. Use the small business section of the site instead of the home section.
What will happen if you try to install it yourself is XP will not see the hard drive. This is because of the SATA drivers. Last edited by glc; 11-10-2008 at 10:10 AM. |
