Loooong Startup Times
I'm running Windows XP. I have 2 GB DDR, a 2.2 GHz Duo Core, and an 9800GTX.
My startup time is seriously like 10 minutes. The computer takes the same time it always has to get to the blue "Welcome" screen. After clicking my name, the screen fades away except for my icon and "Loading your personal settings...", just like it should. Then it hangs on that screen for like 3 minutes! Once the background loads up, it still takes five minutes for it to respond to anything I click or do. I've ended a ton of the startup programs from msconfig. Mentioning msconfig, what services are neccessary for the computer to run? Some of them were obvious to end ("adaware 2008" or some such trash), but others from Microsoft looked neccesary. The hard drive I'm running on is quite old... could that be the problem? It's from 2002, but the computer works fine once it starts up. What else does the computer load when it starts up? Is there anything I can change or modify to give the computer extra resources when it starts up? I remember the min. requirements for XP being much less than my current system configuration. Are there any bottlenecks or whatever that I can change? Thanks for replies. |

Post a HijackThis log and let's see what you have running in your startup. Run it right after a reboot once it finally settles out without opening any other programs.
http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en...kthis/download What exact hard drive do you have and how full is it? |

It's a Seagate from 2002. It has a capacity of 111 GB, and only 7.5 GB are free. I have a second drive from storage if need be. I don't think that this is the problem though, because I've had it at around the same area for a long time, and it got slower on its own it seems. If you need exact part or model number I can get that for you. I've had this disk for a long time. I've never wiped it, so appearantly old programs are causing this? But seriously, it just started doing this a month or two ago, yet I've upgraded my video card and all sorts of other stuff. The reason it gets slower and slower over time is it's getting seriously fragmented and it's too full to defrag. |

Okay, I will do all of the things you said and will post if it worked. As a quick question, is there a ball park area of how free to leave a HDD with an OS on it? Like %15 ? I know that defragging won't work if there's less than %15 free, but I didn't know that an OS needs a lot of free space to run effectively. Last edited by PzkfW; 11-14-2008 at 02:36 PM. |

As a matter of policy, I never let it get more than 75% full. Hard drives are too cheap these days to torture yourself otherwise.
