Dial -up Networking problem under Win 95a
Howdy
You may ask why I am still using Win 95a (valid question). I actually have Win 98 1st ed and 2nd ed but I have two old pentium 1 systems (a P60/66 system and a P90 system - both have 32MB RAM). My old systems run nice and fast with Win 95. I only do Internet/Email and some word processing so these old systems are still very capable. I have set up dial-up networking under Win 95/98 dozens of times by now. I am trying to set up DUN under Win 95a on my P60/66. Win 95a DUN is set up OK on my P90. I have checked all the settings and compared the two PCs. The settings on the two systems are the same. Of course I have just installed Win 95a on the P60/66 and everything seemed to go OK. In fact this is the second time I have installed Win 95a this time as DUN didn't work the first time and there seemed to be some registry issues which I couldn't recover so I re-installed. Basically all my DUN components are set up as well as my Banksia V.34 Winmodem (which seems to be working i.e. dialing up and making the right noises). When I dial up I don't get past userid/password verify (although there is nothing wrong with my details or the account - I can verify this by logging on via the other PC). I don't get to the "Logging onto the Network" stage. The message I get is ,"DUN could not negotiate a compatible protocol. Check your server settings". This I have done ! TCP/IP is installed and bound to the dial up adaptor. Client for MS Networks is also installed. Everything is the same as the other PC but DUN works on that one ! Apart from re-installing Win 95a I have removed DUN completely and re-installed it as well as removing all networking components and re-installing. All the settings and bindings look right. The modem has always worked fine with this PC. Before I installed Win 95a I had it running with Win 98 2nd ED on the same PC. The modem queries and seems to work fine. I'm at a loss to know what's up here. I could re-install Win 98 but I wanted to get my PC running nice and fast via 95 again (defeats the purpose). I am hanging out for my Duron or Thunderbird system but for now it's back down the old banger trail ! Any ideas would be welcome. chou The Web Gecko |

Sure, one little problem with an otherwise stable system, and you're supposed to completely change operating systems? Gimme a break
![]() For your DUN problem, open DUM properties, and UNCHECK everything except TCP/IP. Make sure you're not trying to dial long distance. If that's all in order, why not call your ISP for help? You pay THEM for a service, how about getting some? [/rant] Get the DUN 1.3 update from MS, it will probably cure the problem. Check your winsock version too, there's an update for that as well, and I'm sure they'll both fit on floppys, so you can transfer them from one machine to another. |

Thanks
Thanks reboot !
I'll look into your suggestions. I like Linux but I only have beginner status there so I'm stuck with Windows for a while yet. On the whole most MS stuff works but most weeks something wierd like this surfaces. Like I have loaded this particular Win 95 CD over a dozen times at least (and a few times on this P60/66 system) and have set up DUN with no problem until now. As far as I can see I've done it the same way every time except she don't work this time. Those are the breaks I guess. chou The Web Gecko |
