iTunes in XP x64 / I hate all operating systems

I installed XP x64, drivers were a breeze, but iTunes is...NOT! I have tried both the 32-bit version (no go), and the 64-bit version (supposedly only vista but can be tweaked to run on XP x64 very easily). In either case, I get the iTunes error #2069 that quicktime cannot be initialized. I have searched to the end of the internet trying to fix it to no avail.

and now the rant:
Operating systems these days are a mess. You have so many different choices, and none of them completely "get the job done". XP is starting to get too old. XP x64 is hit or miss in terms of drivers and software. Vista is bloated and full of crap that I don't need. Ubuntu can't run MS office or other apps as well as I need it to - crossover/wine does a very good job, but there are still issues. OS X is...well...it goes without saying that I'm not going there. As more and more operating systems (or different flavors of the same system - cough, vista) emerge, it's harder an harder to get an operating system that does everything you want. I was thrilled to see my sound card, video card, wireless card, and RAID controller all had x64 drivers, but since Apple doesn't support iTunes in XP x64, the whole thing is basically shot and i'll either have to use my laptop for iTunes (songs on an external drive i guess), or just give it up and drop to XP pro on the desktop. Thank god I got cheap copies of XP and XP x64 while my school store still had them. MS doesn't sell them anymore, they only sell a 32-bit vista "upgrade". Ugh.

I put iTunes on my new Vista64 machine and it went on without issue.

Yeah, the apple distribution of 64-bit iTunes is for vista but "not" x64. A simple modification of the installer with ORCA allows it to install, but i'm still getting the error.

as for why i use iTunes...I actually like the iTunes software alot, and have an iPod that I need to keep updated with my music.

Make sure your OS is up-to-date.

Do you already have quicktime installed? If so, either update it or uninstall it. Then try installing iTunes.

BTW, take a look at open office instead of messing with wine. It's improved quite a bit.

XP is not getting too old. It's been refined, and it's mature and stable. XP 64 is another story, however.

Thanks, ended up going out for a while yesterday so I started another windows installation as I left, had it reformat the drive, and started from scratch. I used an ORCA-modified iTunes64 posted at PlanetAMD64, which I had tried earlier with no luck, but this time it worked. I think things were getting too messy, when I checked my program files folder before the reformat, there were multiple quicktime folders named quicktime(2), quicktime(3), etc...my guess is either iTunes was somehow looking in the wrong place for quicktime, or it was something with updates (i did install SP2 and updates both times i installed x64, but I think one of the system restores I did on the original installation rolled it back to SP1, which may have been another issue). But all works now and my iTunes library has been copied over from the old windows...
