i brought by computer in to get reformated with winXP..

i have the apg all in wonder radeon, SB live 5.1 , 1.4 GHz Athlon
DFI AK76-SN
AMD 761/686B Chipset
256MB 2100 DDR Ram (was NEC, but now micron cause they though it was the problem)
40 Gig 7200rpm HDD

well some of that might not matter.. the problem is

they gave me the computer with XP on it and said it was fine so i brough it home. after 2 mins it froze. i was playing a cd in Win media player. it freezes with the video still on the screen and a high pitch note coming out of the speakers.

it also froze both times i tried to install AOL from a CD . 2 times i think

and it froze 2 times at the start up right before the desktop shows up(at the welcome screen)

and it froze a couple of times when i will turn off the monitor and come back later and turn on the monitor and it mouse pointer wont move.

the video display it always on the screen(no blue screens or anyhting)

this computer store has been messing with it for 3 days now and still is telling me it wont run stable. maybe some of you have soem ideas or have experianced this before

My Guess....

Is that they haven't installed the latest soundblaster drivers for that system. If they didn't and have installed windows xp that could be causing the problem. Also, they may have installed the os with the system as an ACPI system instead of a standard system.

Tell them to start there

1.Install the lastest drivers for everything
2.Install the os on the computer as a Standard PC by pressing the "F5" button while the os is looking for the hardware when the initial install is done.

Have them exchange the CDROM - that will fix it...if you have a disc in the CDROM drive then remove the disk before starting up or shutting down - XP isn't like Win9X it will save your settings - so next time it restarts it will know what you actually had -..

Also - make sure that you look at the EVENT VIEWER log files in control panel - Admintrative tools - this will tell you what actually is causing the problem - but as I stated above - this kind of error usally comes from a bad or malfuntioning CDROM...

Hope so for you otherwise you will find yourself in a never ending sad story - if it took him 3 days to figure that out - it seems a bit like he doens't know how to do his job...
