need help installing xp 64 bit

well my freind came over with his gateway T-series labtop dont really know what his hardware is but the stickers on it say windows Vista, AMD Turion64 x2 mobile technology , so i am assuming it can run windows xp 64bit, he says he doesnt want vista anyways and he messed it up pretty good it wont load windows at all, i have installed 64bit before on my PC but itst goin the same way as before, when i insert the disc and boot it, i go to the same windows blue screen it takes awhile to load then it asks set up windows on the selected item press enter there is a split harddrive (im pretty sure) so i choose the biggest one C:\ and hit enter then i go to the quick format selection and it starts after its done formating it says i cant put windows on this portion so
im stuck do i need to delete that portion and create a new one in order to do that or this labtop cant take windows xp 64 bit? hope some1 can help thanks

also i tried the other type of format(the full format) and it couldnt do it on that portion either.

could it be that i need a vista disc to format?

XP 64 bit drivers are hard to come by.

XP 64 bit drivers for a new pc that started with Vista are even harder to come by.

Have you verified you can get drivers for all the devices?

You could probably tell the XP install to zap (delete) any and all partitions and then create a new one.

Check to see if it has drivers for vista 64. If it does, then it will probably support it.

I don't see video, or audio drivers.

I personally wouldn't risk it unless I had a complete back up of my drive before hand.

so just go with vista 32? the hard drive is completly messed it gives me two options to start windows and both auto restart the only thing i can do otherwise is maybe backup the missing files from a vista disc but i dont know what version of vista is on there , no driver discs or anything.

I would stick with the os the laptop came with.

If you need to reinstall it, just use the provided restore disc, or read this: http://support.gateway.com/s/SOFTWAR...LXPH1su7.shtml

Just know that you will lose all data that way.
