serious xp crash on install need HELP

ok I tried doing an xp upgrade on my new 4 month old computer and now I cannot get past the installation without getting a blue screen. It will not go back to the win98 without getting a blue screen. I'm dead. I backed up most of the files that I needed, but before I go ahead and do a fdisk and format and start all over, I can pull up from the C:/ the directory. Is there anyway for me to backup from there? COMPUTER IDIOT HERE! PLEEEEEEEEEEESE HELP. i'm online at ICQ #37541374 if anyone can help the stupid.

Fact, ICQ ? is a giant virus collecting factory.
Some system details would help a LOT too.
You are better off doing a clean install of any operating system, I have not tried using an XP upgrade disk as the full version by showing the previous version, but it should work as did all the previous versions.
(format C go for it.
