Windows Messenger Help

Okay I decided I do not want Windows Messenger running in the background sucking up resources. I never use it. I don't need it. I don't want it.

So I opened it up and unchecked the box next to Run Windows Messenger when Windows starts. I also unchecked the box next to Allow Windows Messenger to run in the background.

But I noticed tonight that when I opened Outlook Express to check my email the green Windows Messenger icon appeared in the system tray.

When I exited out of Outlook Express the icon was gone again.

So is this normal? Like it's supposed to appear when you check your email? And then disappear when you exit?

In OE:

Tools -> Options -> General

Uncheck "automatically log on to Windows Messenger".

It didn't work. Even after I unchecked that box the Messenger icon still loads in the System Tray. But I did find a way to wipe it out.

Sounds like it's starting with OE.

Try this:

For those of you that want a definite solution:

1. Click on Start/Run.
2. In the Run Dialog Box type gpedit.msc and then press Enter.
3. In the right pane double-click on Computer Configuration.
4. Double-click on Administrative Templates.
5. Double-click on Windows Components.
6. Double-click on Windows Messenger.
7. Double-click on Do not allow Windows Messenger to run.
8. In the Setting tab click on Enabled.
9. Click on Apply or OK.
