"common" window opening on start

Please forgive me if I get some of the terms wrong. I am old and technology baffles me sometimes.

I got a new cell phone and I downloaded a couple programs on my computer (running XP SP2) After I got the programs installed I ended up with a "common" windows explorer window opening up and staying open. It also had a folder containing "helper.dll" in it.

I managed to get rid of the "helper.dll" but the "common" window still pops up/stays open.

Question is....How do I make this window stop popping up/opening on start.

Thanks

PS. Remember, I am old so I need step by step help :-)

Start
Run
msconfig

Look at the Startup tab, you should be able to figure out which entry is the offending one. Uncheck it.

Change sometimes to all the time...

I have like 20 items in my start-up tab.....not a one of them pops out at me as being the problem.

I'm sorry, but I really am dumb when it comes to things like this.

A little more detail would be greatly appreciated

TIA

You aren't going to hurt anything by unchecking any of them. Trial and error. Worst case, you may have to start Windows in safe mode to recheck something, but that's not very likely at all.
