Win XP Update KB952069

I have something that is bugging me. Back on 12/12 or so, my automatic Windows update told me to install update KB952069 - Windows Media Player 11 SP3. Ok, fine, I did that. It is in my Add/Remove Programs showing installed on 12/12. Ok, again fine.

However, windows update keeps telling me over and over to install update KB952069. It resides in my task bar. When I shut my computer down, it installs itself again. Upon boot up, it's there in my taskbar.

When I check Windows Update, it still tells me to update this same one. When I go to Windows Update history, it shows each time I have updated that darned thing......about 7 times LOL.

Does the sticky you have about run/cmd apply to this problem? I know others are having this problem also, although not everyone.

Thanks!

Thank you, GLC. I searched for answers a lot before writing PCMech. The only thing I didn't do was the suggestion of run/cmd etc etc.. I will try that soon to see if it resolves the problem. I know turning off any AVG didn't help, nor did safe mode..

I will let you know if it worked.
Thank you!

Unfortunately, it didn't work. I am still being prompted to install it..even though it already is. Even Belarc shows it installed. I thank you for trying.

I am going to try to find out more about this will post again if I find the solution.
Merry christmas!

This could very well be a bug in the update that doesn't mix well with some systems (wouldn't be the first time for MS. I've checked several XP sites/forums and no mention of these problems yet.

**update** Ok, no matter what I could not get rid of this looped notificatioo of an update I already have....so I did something I didn't know I could do. I simply right clicked on the notification icon in my taskbar and pressed the advanced button and chose for it not to "show me this anymore". Voila....right or wrong, it gone. It still shows are installed ...but no more notification.

If may still want me to download and install it when I go to Windows Update, but I haven't gone there yet. Maybe I will never go there again

That's my story and I'ma stickin' to it.

Kb 952069

I found another guy, further down, at Vistaheads that said he uninstalled Win Media Player and reinstalled and then installed 952069 and it stuck but you should really go to the vistaheads site and read it for yourself cause I'm not techie.

MS is calling me back this afternoon. They have been working on it for 3 days and I saw this post but didn't read far enough in the vistahead thread to see the other. MS told me it was a disconnect between the Dell machine for business and the "Home" edition of XP and I can either hide the icon like you did or reinstall my OS which they would do for me. They took off SP3 and now that I read this guy's resolution it all makes sense, even though I haven't done it yet. After they took off SP3 (I am REALLY not techie so it takes me forever to realize what is happening) I mentioned to Manish, my helper, that there's a Windows Media Player icon suddenly on my taskbar. I clicked on it to see what version of WMP I have and I get the installation wizard.

So now it all makes sense and can't believe we didn't do this first. If the KB security update is not working and it has to do with a piece of software, in this case WMP, then we should be looking at THAT piece of software and NOT the OS or security update mechanism. But this is all on the results of someone else's fix. It has taken me 3 days cause I googled wrong. I googled KB952069 instead of KB 952069 with the space btwn the letters and #'s so I never got the Vistaheads results. Only the reference to post # 8 here and it was actually way further down that thread that some guy gave a fix that according to him he said worked for him.

Can't wait to share with Manish when he calls. Oh, another thing. The tech before Manish that referred me to him did take over my computer and together we did see the problem. The update is dated Dec 9, 2008 but after it installs, the Security Catalog folder says Nov 10, 2008 so it doesn't update the date in the folder but they assure me that the update itself is in which I find suspect. Without it updating the Security Catalog date correctly I have to wonder if I actually HAVE that security hole in WMP patched or not. It could be that in certain combinations of stuff, the date update code doesn't work.

Wow Nancy. Looks like you and Manish did some research. When I have time, maybe I will uninstall WMP, reinstall and try the update again. Maybe.

I thank you for the fine post and the time you took to type it all out. Hope you have a great upcoming new year
