Server 2003 and DHCP
Hello All,
I am troubleshooting an error code on a SBS Server 2003 machine - the one that says the scope is full and 0 ip addresses are left......The machine was set up with the scope of IP addresses from 192..168.1.50 to 192.168.1.80 - and all the ip addresses are being used. In addition, they are all set to infinite lease periods. What is the best way to correct this? 1. Extend the ip address range or 2. Set a specified lease time - like 3 days, rather than infinite - I know this will increase the network traffic, but may get rid of the ip addresses not being currently used and make them available for reassignment Thank you |

Both. Extend the scope and put some kind of limit on lease time. When you extend the scope, be careful that it does not interfere with any static addresses you may be using on the network. I don't see any issues with a 1 week lease.

Thanks for the reply GLC....
There are 2 ip addresses listed as being excluded from distribution - they are not within the scope. I extended the start of the scope to begin with 192.168.1.40 and set the lease time to expire in 3 days....now another question......When this server was initailly set up with infinite leases, is what it did was assign a new ip address for each client conected? Since the lease was infinite, it never renewed/reassigned ip addres - is this correct? Now, is what will happen is after 3 days expire, DCHP will check to see if each client is connected, if it is - renew it lease(ip address).....if the device is not connected, then it will return the ip address to the pool to be reassigned to another device when needed? I think they used up all the ip addresses in the scope, because they were set to infinite and they connect and reconnect with laptops......they are running SBS server 2003 with 5 CAL's.. Thanks for your time and replies - I am trying to learn about server 2003 ................. |

3 days is a bit often in my opinion.

I will set it to 7 days..............is there a way to cause a reset of lease times now from the server? And if there is, will it just reassign ip addresses to currently connected clients?
