Partitioning a HDD for the OS

In my next build I plan on partitioning one HDD so the OS (Win XP Pro SP3)will be separate so if it gets bugs I wont lose any data (hopefully).

With the current build that I have this was not done. Is there a way to partition it now (safely) without losing anything?

How much space should be alotted for Win XP Pro SP3)?

Thanks,

CI

How big is the hard drive?

How much stuff do you have on it?

Are you planning on putting the os and programs on one partition and then personal files on the second?

How much personal files do you have?

If the data is important - Develop a backup plan

Partitioning "should" result in no data loss but I would suggest backing up anything important BEFORE you do the partitioning.
I usually do about a 20 to 25 GB partition for my OS.

Hi guys,

My first system is a AMD Athlon 4000+ 2.4 San Diego socket 939. I currently have two HDD's, one is a Maxtor 250 Ghz IDE w/ the OS (Windows XP Pro SP2). The second drive is a Seagate SATA 320 Ghz thats partitioned in two. One side has music files, the 2nd half has pictures. Neither side is close to being full.

The Maxtor will stay with this computer since it has the OS on it. Might keep the Seagate here too after moving contents to a new HDD.

Before I posted earlier I had planned on shrinking the current partitions, making a 3rd partition and moving everything except the OS to #3.

The second system will eventually be composd of an AMD Athlon 64 X2 6400+ Windsor 3.2GHz Socket AM2 CPU, an ASUS M3N-HT Deluxe/HDMI AM2+/AM2 NVIDIA nForce 780a mobo, and CORSAIR XMS2 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel RAM.

I'm not completely decided on the model of video card but it will be EVGA. The PSU will be either a Corsair or OCZ UNIT. I "may" try SLI this time too but I haven't decided 100% yet!

If ya need anymore info just let me know.

HTH,

CI

PS: I do plan on using the older one as a backup/spare computer.

Same here for XP. Just make sure you install everything else to the other logical drives.
