Thinning out Start Up programs

My Windows 2000 takes ages to boot - and often halts in shut down and has to be "encouraged" by clicking shut down again.

How can I thin out the number of programs that run automatically from start up - the ones that populate the bottom right hand tool bar.

There's no programs in StartUp under programs.

The shut down freeze happens as these bottom right programs are being closed.

I'm sure I could get by without most of those programs running all the time.

Any suggestions would be most appreciated

Download and install CCleaner. Not only can you do some spring cleaning, you have access to the "Tools" section which has another tab "Startup" and in here you will find everything that is starting with Windows.
If you are uncertain of what entries to delete just disable them until you see what effect it has on your machine.

After that, you might want to check this site to learn what processes you can disable from starting up: http://www.blackviper.com/WIN2K/servicecfg.htm

If your confident in registry editing, you can go to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

to clear out some of the entries.

I think the only one needed is cftmon.exe, and that's not 100% needed.
More information on cftmon here: http://www.auditmypc.com/process/cftmon.asp

Though, don't just delete everything you see, some things are important, such as print driver managers and such.

Windows 2000 doesn't come with "msconfig" built in. Several sites offer a download of msconfig for XP that can be usied in Win2K. Here's one:

http://www.thetechguide.com/downloads.html (look at the bottom of the list)

Once you have msconfig available on your 2000 pc, use the following site as a guide to determine what programs you can shut down on startup.

Thanks for everyone's help, my PC is starting so much quicker now.

But it is still sticking on shut down. How can I see a list of it's progress so I can see what's stalling it?

Happy New Year all,

Dazzer

I'm not sure if this works on Windows 2000, but here's something:

http://www.maximumpc.com/article/fea...r_windows_tips

Scroll down to the one titled "Hack The Registry to Make Your System Shut Down More Quickly: TRUE"

Hope this helps.
