New XP Pro problem

I cannot get windows defrag to run.

If I use Auslogics program it will run and do a defrag but the window program won't start.

Also, I cannot do a system restore. When I select a date and then click next, nothing happens.
I have tried different dates and get the same results.

I have run AVG with the latest updates, and spybot, and still have the same issues.

What do I try next?

Thanks

Press F8 for the boot menu - like it's been for years.

I got to the option of selecting the safe mode.

When I clicked on the Safe Mode, the screen flickered a few times and boot in the regular manner, not the safe mode.

Send a message via AIM to Panama Red
You have to use the Arrow keys to highlight Safe Mode or Safe Mode with Networking. Then press the Enter key. You will see another screen showing your operating system. Hit Enter again.

I have done these things guys and it is NOT booting in the safe mode.
Since Monday, the 29th of Dec. I have noticed the following issues.

1) Getting a Winiguard Alert warning. I am selecting No on the request to use it. I understand it is a non working piece of #@%&*

2) If I click on my "K" drive, a USB drive with a lexar thumb drive in it, I get the message
"Resycled\boot.com is not a valid Win32 application"

3) Cannot use Window defrag. It won't run. Auslogics defrag does run ok.

4) Cannot restore system to an earlier date.

Do I have malware, shareware or some other issue going on?

My system is otherwise running fine and has not slowed down.

Is there any software I can use to clean up this mess.

Thanks

Thanks for the lead. Tried the trial version, found one problem, Trojan.DNSChanger, and quaranteened it.

Howsome ever, all the above problems still exist.

Try this:

Start -> Run -> type "MSCONFIG" (without quotes) -> select the Diagnostic Startup and reboot
