Hypothetical Question
If I hypothetically copied my copy of microsoft works from my old Xp's program folders onto my new windows Vista notebook programs folder would I need a serial key thing?

You can't copy "just" a program. Data, yes, programs, no. They have to be installed on the system, and therefore, yes you need the serial key thing...
