moving settings
In xp home, I tried using the wizard to move setting from my old hard drive to the new one.
It seems that you have to make a disk on your older pc to use with the wizard. I still have my old drive in the case with the new one. once I've extracted all the data from it I will format it and use it as a secondary drive. my question is, can I move my settings without having to physically reconnect the drive to make some sort of disk?...and how would I do this? also, how do you change that icon at the top of the start menu? |

Why don't you just "clone" the old drive to the new one? You can do this with free software available from the hard drive manufacturer.

I have to agree with glc about cloning your old drive. That would likely be easier than having to extract all the settings you're wanting.
As for your other question about changing the start menu icon.....just go Start, Control Panel, User Accounts. When that opens up, click the account name that you want to change the icon in, and then pick "Change my picture". It'll give you a list of several different pictures to choose from, or if you have a particular picture on your hard drive that you want to use, just go to the Browse option underneath their pics and find the one you're wanting to use on your hard drive and select it.

Or, you can go into the taskbar and start menu properties and choose "classic start menu" if you want it to look like Win98.

glc and all,
thanks for the reply but I don't think that cloning will address the issue. my old drive has win 98se as the os, the new one has xp home. I've personalised the settings so much that it could take days to make xp work the way my 98se machine does...not to mention the programs I have installed. looks like I'll have to move the old drive to another box temporarily and network it to the new drive to transfer the files...unless there is another way?? |

Here is a good tutorial which should address what you want to do:

solved
I finally figured out a way to move my files, folders and settings by running the wizard first on the 98 hard drive saving the data to a folder there. then I booted the maching by putting the xp drive on the cable as the master and booted it (I set the 98 drive as the slave). I ran the wizard on the xp drive and directed it to the folder on the 98 drive where the files were comopressed and stored.
I've been operating 98 for 10 years now...getting used to xp is not as hard as I thought it woudl be. It seems very stable and most applications load and run faster...my start up is much faster as well as the way applications start and run. I do think it prudent to do a little reading now though... I've kept the side of my box open and can switch back easily if I need to...just 'tull I'm a bit more confident. thanks again Last edited by Dan; 01-11-2009 at 12:31 AM. |
