regedit

I've tried to run regedit to disable error reporting....
the regedit window appears, but within a few seconds closes before I can do anything.
anyone have any ideas why this is happening and how to fix it??

update:
I just tried to run msconfig and the same thing is happening...
this is a new occurance
virus maybe???

Most likely an infection, Dan. Try running Malwarebytes in Safe mode.

yep, because this is a new install of XP I hadn't had time to install my virus program.
I installed it and it found the Morphine virus.
I don't have a clue where I got it...I don't open emails that I don't recognise.
most important is that it's been removed....

If it's a fresh new install, you might just want to wipe the drive clean and start over just to be sure.

I would zero fill first.
