Win XP retail or OEM
I am considering putting XP Home on my new build as a clean install.
Should I put out the extra bucks for Retail Version or will OEM be good enough? Do you get anything extra with retail, other than the box? |

I posted the same question a few days ago and Reboot was kind enough to reply that I could install the upgrade version like a full version by inserting my full version CD of WIN98 when XP asked for verifaction of a valid OS.

If you really want the pretty coloured box, spend the extra for the retail, nothing else is different.

Sorry about that, I misread your original question.

M$ will support retail and upgrade packages but not OEM - support for OEM must come from the vendor.

GLC is right. I would buy the retail version only because if in fact for some act of god it becomes damaged you will be able to get support from Microsoft.

Just to elaborate a little further. I have been reading some posts where some folks have burned copies for uhum back up purposes but the burned copies are not working. I do not know for sure if this is fact or fiction. Still the same my point being if you do damage your retail version disk you can get it replaced from Microsoft. I hope this will help you in your decision making.

works for me
I bought a OEM at direct deals, Pro Full, for $158. I havn't made a backup of it yet, but can't see why it wouldn't work. And just for the sake of this discussion, if I had to I could always borrow one to use in a jam, or to copy for a backup.
My thinking may be back ass wards on this but for $150, I will take the risk. I get disks thru the mail all the time and have never gotten a damaged one. Direct deals also gives three days to get a refund. That may not be much time, but its enough to know if the disk works or not. Should ask AOL how hard it is to damage a disk, they must mail about a billion of em a year, and it seems I CAN"T break them :-) I will post back tomorrow if my back up does NOT work. |

I was wondering the same thing, although the other way around (Do you get anything extra if you go OEM). Does retail XP have a setup option oemsetup.exe?

extra?
Not that I can tell, I believe there is no diff between the two OEM/retail, other then support from M/S (like glc said), and around 150 dollars, OEM is now $140. I don't claim to be anything but dangerous on a PC, But have never gotten any support from Bill. Yes I use the web site to learn stuff, but I honestly thought u had to pay to get "real" support, like phone sex or something like that.
I did just think of something else u may get, is a better book in retail. But to answer the question, I dont see anything extra in the OEM. If anyone is still reading this string, my question has become, Is it legal? And if not, how are they selling OEM like it was? Someone told me it was not legal to put an OEM on a used PC. And just as an added atraction, PLUS is not worth paying for. I won't call it a rip off, because I know ppl that have enjoyed it. But everything on it you can get on the net if you take the time to look. |

As far as support goes, with the OEM you will still have access to Windows Update, Knowledge Base, and new serials. What you won't have is the pleasure of talking to Microsoft. Which, given the number of posts on this and other forums cannot be that satisfying.
