Trying to update Windows...with little luck.

I've tried this before, but today thought I'd give it another shot....and that's upgrading my Windows XP to (SP 3 I believe) but as before, it's now been 8 hours, and it's only gone to about 1/3 of the way across the graph. It says it's "Backing up the Registry"...which is the same place it always stops.

I've done this overnight in the past, and it has gotten to about the same place each time.

Is there a way to force the update? Or at least get past whenever his sticking it at the place it's at now?

I'm thinking of just hitting "Cancel" as it getting a little ridiculous at trying to update so many times without the process finishing.

Thanks in advance for any advice/comments.

Are you doing this thru Windows Update or using a downloaded file? I prefer to use the downloaded file from here.

I've had to install SP3 in Safe Mode on an XP Home laptop before. The installer says MS doesn't recommend doing it that way but the laptop hasn't had any trouble since.

Thanks for the link. Yes, I'm going through Windows Update. I assume others have gone through this same thing, and I'll give the link a try.
