windows xp checking file system on c:
I know i am years behind but I have the same issuse with the same type of CPU. I dont understand how to fix this problem....can someone help?
Hello, i have a vaio and it has Windows xp home edition. When I starts the computer, a blue screen appears with the following message: Check file system C: The type of file system is FAT32 One of your disks needs to be checked for consistency. You may cancel the disk check, but it is strongly recommended that you continue. Volume Serial Number is 1871-CC6E then it takes about 50 seconds to end the disk check. when it finally ends, the desktop background appears but there is no start bar nor any icons present. It is just the plain wall paper. There is no way I can turn off the computer normally (Ctrl+Alt+delete "task manager" is disabled). If I try to reinstall windows xp with the instalation kit, it does not work either (the same blue screen appears). Does any one have any idea what the problem might be? I will be very thankfull if somebody gives me an answer and a suggestion on how I can fix it. I will appreciate your help. |

The most likely cause of this for you is that the drive is failing, copy everything off it onto your other harddrive and re-format the old drive, Make sure you do a full (not quick) format as this will find and mark any Bad Sectors.
It could also be that the drive's "heads" are going in this case a reformat will not fix it, and it's best thrown out. this might work... worth a try or Click start/run, type cmd and click ok. From the prompt, run chkntfs /d, this should stop the checkdisk on every boot. If that doesn't work, see http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=831426 Also, try running chkdsk /r to scan for bad sectors. Unfortunately, there are rare disk errors on NTFS drives that chkdsk is incapable of repairing. I've run into several cases where I ultimately had to back up the client's drive, reformat, and restore. you coukd also download the ultimate boot disk, burn on a cd.. stick in the drive and restart booting to the cd rom, run the hard drive diagnostic utilities on the cd... Start it in safe mode, then open a command prompt and type:
convert c: /fs:ntfs jdeb, your advice is only valid for NTFS drives and this one is FAT32. |

However, it is very possible the drive has problems - I'd recommend you back up your data first, because the convert may fail if the drive is bad. If the drive is bad, it will have to be replaced anyway.
Doing the conversion may take care of this though - NTFS is a LOT more stable than FAT32. |

Remove the hard drive and use a USB adapter to copy them off to another machine.
