Win 2000 pro see 30GB HDD as 7GB

I ran into an issue reformatting my 30gb drive after using GetDataBack to recover data from the drive. Partition Magic sees it as 8gb accessible, Disk Management sees it as 7.8gb inaccessible. The BIOS sees it as 30gb and the PM8 DOS boot floppy sees it as 30gb. (8gb and 21gb) I formatted the 21gb as the 8gb was already formatted with the PM8 Windows. I booted back to windows but it still says 7.8gb in Disk Management but now says 8gb and 21gb in PM8 Windows. They are accessible in PM8 but not through windows. I have SP4 on board and all other updates. I know there is a solution for this but it’s escaping me. Anyone out there to jog my memory about this?

Thanks the suggestion glc but it is still 7.8gb. Call me a dark horse but I have had enough! I can’t for the life of me find the solution for this problem. So I wiped off both my drives and started fresh. My data is safe in a remote drive. I went to one of my other computers and created a slipstream of XP, (Unattended Install) mainly because I’m sick of inputting data. Cleaned XP up for a minimal install and downloaded Virtual PC 2007. Created a slipstream for 2000pro and made an ISO of it, and then created a virtual partition. I am now in the process of installing 2000 in the virtual machine. So I guess that I’m not really a dark horse but just in the shade, for now. The quest goes on!

Check the jumpers and make sure you didn't jumper it for cylinder limitation.

Thanks glc. The drive is set as slave. I would assume by saying cylinder limitation you are referring to cable select. Just finished slipstreaming 2000 with SP4 and all the drivers I needed and installing into VMware. I'll let you know how it goes.

No........review the settings, there is a specific setting for capacity limit. If you are reading the jumper chart upside down (been there, done that) you may THINK it's set to slave but it's really set to limit.

Why are you using slave anyway? You should be using an 80 wire cable and cable select.

Well I looked in my wire box and I only have 40 pin left. I'll see if I can lay my hands on one somewhere. And the drive is set slave. Made sure that it wasn't upside down.

80 wire cables are still only 40 pin.

Well I got it all done. I created the VM partition in the problem drive. I used the whole drive 29gb for the partition. Installed the 2000pro ISO and it went without a hitch. I see the whole drive partition 29gb after the install. Interesting that I can see the whole partition in VMware, and can’t see it through a physical disk install.
