Hi,
I'm doing a fresh install of xp, do I have to install each service in order, or does sp3 have everything in it? Thanks

If your XP CD has no service packs on it, you cannot go straight to SP3.
It may be tedious, but I highly recommend you do it this way: Install SP2 from an admin download, then manually go to Windows Update. It will have you download updates to Windows Update. Keep installing updates till it offers you a ton of critical updates or SP3. Then install SP3 from an admin download. THEN get IE7, then get all post-SP3 criticals. If you want to slipstream, I do not recommend you slipstream a baseline to SP3. Slipstream it to SP2, install it, get the Windows Update updates, then manually install SP3. |

Service Pack 3 will not install without at least Service Pack 1 installed, Service Pack 2 will install without Service Pack 1.
I know this because I have just finished a new install. My slipstreamed OEM SP3 disk dumped out on me and in a rush I installed XP with no Service Packs, I tried to go straight to SP3 and it refused saying I needed at least SP1 installed, not having a copy of SP1 handy I installed SP2 first with no issues.

Thanks guys, I don't have any service packs installed. So I'll install SP2 and go to updates to get the rest.
Thanks again It's funny, I downloaded sp1 from microsoft's site and they gave me SP2? I guess they do want you to do that one! I tried to run SP2 and it told me I have to install sp1 first? Well that's what I'll do. Well you can't get SP1 anymore. I found a SP2 disk I created a couple of years ago, it crashed the first time but seems to be working now. Hi glc I installed SP2 and went to Windows Update and installed all that verification software it requires and it offered me sp3 right off the bat without having to download a bunch of updates first, all in all went pretty smooth. edit.. I would recommend you slipstream yourself a SP2 install CD while you can still get SP2.
