Windows ME Wireless Internet Problem

I know that ME has its own forum, but there hasn't been any post there since August of '08 so I figured this would be the next best place to go.

So I have a laptop that I'm working on for somebody and it unfortunately has Windows ME. I installed a Netgear wireless card. The driver installation went smoothly and it found the wireless router fine, but my problem lies when I open IE or any browser. I can't seem to get to any website using a URL. Under command prompt, I can ping the router, other computers on the network, and google's IP. I was even able to open up IE and go to google's IP and bring up the home page. This leads me to believe that it has something to do with DNS, but I could be wrong.

Any help is greatly appreciated, thank you!

Try this: (From GLC's Post) (I assume it would work for you)

Open a command prompt. Type:

ipconfig /flushdns

Reboot.

I tried this and it didn't work. I know it works for other operating systems, but I think I need a different command for Millenium.

Run "winipcfg". What is it pulling for IP, gateway, and DNS?

IP: 192.168.1.103
Gateway: 192.168.1.1

There's nothing for DNS. I went to Control Panel>Network>TCP/IP Netgear 108 Mbps Wireless PC Card>DNS Configuration and it's disabled. Should I enable it?

Did you click the More Info button? It *SHOULD* be pulling a DNS from the router with DHCP even if DNS is disabled.

You can try to enable DNS - under "host" you can put anything - it does not matter what you put in there but it cannot be blank. Add 192.168.1.1 as a DNS server.

I enabled DNS, put 192.168.1.1 under it, and made a host name. It seemed to help because now I can get to Google and make a search, but it's incredibly slow. Should there be any other settings I change under TCP/IP Properties? I have:

Bindings: Client for Microsoft Networks (checked)
Advanced: Allow Binding To ATM (Value: No)
NetBIOS: I want to enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP (greyed out and checked)
DNS Configuration: Should there be anything under "Domain Suffix Search Order"?
Gateway: I added 192.168.1.1 and it seems to have the same effect as not having it there, slow.

I really have to get this person to upgrade their computer. This thing's got to be nearly 10 years old.

I'm still having problems with this computer. The computer seems to have all the correct settings, but it's unable to connect to a website. IP addresses work fine and I'm able to ping them.

Try reading out the actual ISP's DNS from the router status page and enter those.

IMHO, you would be much better served replacing that computer, not upgrading it. It not worth it to upgrade something that old as older parts are all you will be able to replace items with and they will be much more expensive than newer generation parts.

Oh no, by "upgrade" I meant getting a new computer. This laptop has had as many hardware upgrades as it can handle.

I got 2 DNS addresses from my router's status page and put them in and no change. I

I think part of the problem with this computer is the fact that I'm not 100% sure that when I'm changing settings it's for the wireless card. When I go to the command prompt and I go to ipconfig, I have "0 Ethernet adapter, 1 Ethernet adapter, 2 Ethernet adapter, and 3 Ethernet adapter" and the settings I've put in change the 0 one. All the others have straight 0.0.0.0 for everything. Could these other ones have anything to do with the conflict?
