Disk Read Error On Bootup
My dad's laptop (my old Compaq) just gave him a "disk read error" upon bootup, and I'm having some trouble fixing it. I booted from the XP dvd and went into the the recovery console. I did chkdsk /r first and it froze at 25%. I tried chkdsk by itself, and it said the volume appeared fine and did not scan. I forced it with chkdsk /p and it froze again at 25%.
I'm assuming it froze because I left it at 25% for about ten minutes before rebooting - should I have left it longer? What should I do now? He's actively backed most of his stuff up, but not everything...so we're trying to do everything we can to recover it.

Sure sounds like it died...You could try placing the drive in an external enclosure and see if you can get files off of it..Just keep your fingers crossed.

Only other thing I'd know to try is the hard drive diagnostics program for whatever brand the hard drive is. Doesn't sound too good though if chkdsk is freezing like that.

He went and bought a new 160 gb internal hd yesterday and we put it. Installed Windows on it and the computer acts like it's brand new. We ordered an external enclosure off newegg yesterday too, so we'll see if we can mount the old drive and get everything off when it comes.
Wish us luck! |

The enclosure came in today and the computer is not reading the drive. The enclosure light stays lit red, then begins blinking slowly like it is processing data, but never turns green or shows up on XP. I'm going to try it on a Vista desktop soon, but any ideas on what's going on?
I tried it on my Macbook - even though its formatted NTFS, shouldn't it at least pick up that something is plugged into it? |

Tom.
Does it show up in the BIOS? You may have to enable USB legacy in the BIOS and have it plugged in in order to see it in the BIOS during boot.
