Copying Problems Grumble

I have been trying to get files from different sources and backups all on my computer to sync up and organize, and then delete the extras. Windows stalls on copy or cut on certain files or folders with too long of names (the names were done long for easier explanation of what was in the folder and some aren't all that bad, i.e. a CD name) It is annoying because if the files were originally saved as that and it saved, why is it an issue now? Is there a setting on my reinstall that restricts the filenames that perhaps wasn't that way on the original drive? How can I fix it? By the way, I hate that Windows just says it can't copy it or other problem files and stops. Why in the world didn't Microsoft have it skip the one that was the problem and continue on with a note at the end that such and such could not copy or something?

Well, the last question was probably more rhetorical, but if someone has an answer, I would love to hear it. However, I would like to copy or cut these with the titles they have so it is easier to sync. Also what would be the best way to get rid of the extras? Some of these might be unique on each drive so unfortunately, I need to get them all together. Especially on the ones copied, the creation date will not be accurate. I suppose I could go by modified, but that still seems like a lot of work. Is there an easier, but accurate way?
