Adding before existing text sometimes overwrites

This is a problem I seem to have on occasion and perhaps on more than one computer. Is this an Microsoft issue, or am I doing something differently? Sometimes when I am typing (maybe in a Word Document) and adding text before existing text it will add it fine. Other times it overwrites what is there when I don't want it to. Any ideas or information?

Press the insert button on the keyboard. That should switch from normal mode to overwrite mode. Make sure it doesn't say overwrite. (This applies to most text editing programs I believe.)

I never knew an insert button existed. It just seems like sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. Maybe it is the source document I am using (I use an old one as a template sometimes and update the differences for the week to week document.
