After the red line and restart, did you let it boot on its on, or did you "Press any Key to Boot to CD"? You have to leave it to restart on its own. Otherwise, the whole process starts anew.

a disk read error message came up
the statement starts out Press any key to boot from the cd
a disk read error occurred press Ctrl +Alt _ del which as you stated starts the whole process all over again. So where do I go from here. the computer is set to boot to the cd rom first then the hdd for the second. Is this correct? How can I make the system read the disk correctly it appears to have no problem doing the first part without a problem so what can I do now? There is another part that talks about recovery i pressed this but I had to choose which one I wanted to recover and it appeared like a dos prompt so I just shut down the system. I do have my other harddrive which has the same operating system but I did not want to disk copy the drive because the other drive did not have enough space. Any help would be appreciated. thank you |

Did you set up the new hd with WD utilities? I would try that first then ty installing XP again. You set the boot order CD frist then HD like you did already. When the system reboots, and your once again prompt to hit any key to boot from CD, just ignore it and it should finish the install..

tried to use the WD disk to format but
I tried the WD lifeguard disk and tried to format the drive but it would not allow me to use the entire drive as one partiition only up to 137 gb. What about the disk read error occured mean? I heard that people copy the entire cd to the new hard drive then run setup from the harddrive. I would think that I would have to set aside a partition of a certain size to hold the program. If this is possible how would I accomplish that?

What size is your WD hard drive? Does the Lifeguard disk allow you to wipe the drive? Wondering if there are some files on the HD from your previous attempts to install th OS. If you can't wipe it with Lifeguard, you can download, burn ISO and run Ultimate Boot CD. It has a couple of programs to zero fill the hard drive. The XP CD should then format the drive for you as part of the installation process. If it continues to hang at the red line restart, you might have a faulty installation disk.

have deleted the partions and reformated the drive
I have a 320 GB drive which will be replacing a a 120 drive currently on the computer which is partitioned into a 78 gb 30 gb etc. At the present time I have it in the computer not attached via cables. After being forced to hit any key after the redline did not automatically go to the graphic interface I deleted the partition which I understand caused the xp cd to reformat the new 320 gb drive. Now the line which states " read drive error" concerns me. When I received the software in 2003 I made a backup copy so I went into my bios and changed the boot order to 1st the cd drive then the floppy because I saw that the DVD drive was being accessed after the CD drive so I put the backup copy into the DVD drive I found that I used the copy with no problems to load one of my attempts to format -partition and load the first section. As I mentioned before the WD lifeguard disk at the site is a windows 11.2 which I downloaded but there is no iso after extracting it there is a setup folder. I copied it to a CD which I thought would boot up but this did not happen. I am on a laptop which I do not want to mess up because then I would have no access to the internet at all for help. Why would the xp pro cd work for part of the install and not after the redline restart?
Can any one tell me if I can get the WD help to reformat and drive as one whole how do I copy the xp=pro cd to the new drive then go in and launch the setup so that I have a copy of xp-pro on the drive in a separate partition if that would be the thing to do and how big should this partition or drive be to hold the copy. I will google iso and ultimate boot cd in the meantime. I have to bo back to work today so will check in later. Hope this helps. thanks for your time. |

You need to "slipstream" your XP CD with SP2. This may be needed for Setup to see a drive larger than 137gb.
That said, you can "clone" the old drive to the new one with WD's DLG for DOS, and it should let you adjust partition sizes if you use the advanced mode. |
