Auto log off after boot up

Last night Windows XP downloaded and installed a security update. After restart, the splash screen momentarily appeared then put me into a log on screen. If I click to log in, same thing happens.

I have tried various things in safe mode, ie system restore but same thing happens.

HELPPPPPP.

After checking other threads, I see that Moosefox has he same problem.

Can you uninstall the update while in safe mode?

I can't even log in under safe mode. I now think that may have been a coincidence. Mcafee at the same time removed some malware that I stumbled upon.

I did some research using my wife's laptop and found that removal of the malware can corrupt the registry causing the login loop.

It sounded like you could get into safe mode.

If you believe it's related to a virus, I would suggest connecting it to another computer and using that computer to scan the drive. Also use malwarebytes to scan the drive.

You might be able to try a repair install of xp to see if that will let you boot it afterwards.

You are seeing what we have seen at BarNETt computer for about 2 weeks now on client machines. This virus replaces the the log on script windows uses, removal of the virus removes the script which damages the logging system.

Our only way has been to wipeout and resetup the machines. If you guys know of another way, please do tell.
