Re installing XP

I have an old Dell Dimension 8400 that crashed a couple years ago. I purchased a new hard drive, installed it and attempted to install Win XP using the restoration CD. At the "Setup will complete in approximately: 13 minutes" mark (Installing Devices), the download will "stall" or I will get an error msg(s). Last error msg was "PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA" STOP:0X00000001(0xE1DE6008, 0x8053CE49, 0x00000001). I have tried a couple of times and it seems to produce the error msg or "stall" in the installation at this point.

The restore disk is most likely loading drivers for the original hdd installed and these drivers aren't compatable with the new hdd. You'll probably need an original OS disk to (at least) load a generic driver for the hdd.

I suspect that Setup is running off the disk and when trying to write to the hdd drive, it fails.

Sorry, rwest, not even close. The Dell CD is not a restore CD, it's a generic Windows CD locked to a Dell bios. It should install seamlessly if there are no hardware issues. That particular error message more often than not is due to faulty ram or a faulty hard drive. It can also be caused by a dirty or scratched CD or a faulty or dirty CD drive.

Dig out your Dell Resource CD and boot with it. Run full system diagnostics.

Are you sure that was a 01 stop error? A page fault usually gives you a 50.

I am getting all types of error msgs.....and yes, the error msgs are what showed up - copied them letter for letter...hopefully it is not the hard drive as I just purchased that a couple of days ago. I had at one time doubled the memory...wondering if something went haywire there.....

Remove the extra stick you installed, as GLC says it is indicative of a hardware fault with RAM being the most likely culprit.

Removed the extra memory and XP loaded...thanks guys...but....now having some problems with the RAID memory that I need to take a look at when I tried to install all the drivers. Will definitely get back on here if I run into problems as I did last night after installing.

Okay guys, did what you suggested and have been able to download WinsXP. I purchased a replacement CD from Dell and downloaded with that. Seems everything was working great. I purchased a Wireless Router and USB Adapter to be able to get onto the Internet. Got on, had to restart and when comp came back on it was showing the "Log on To Windows" screen, which I have never seen before. This screen is requiring a password with I have never had for Windows. It has my user name "Jon" and a place to type in a password. Every time I reboot this appears. I am stuck! I have NO idea what my password might be. Would it be best to reinstall WinsXP again???
Thanks guys...

Jon

Boot it into Safe Mode and see if you can log in as Administrator without a password. If you can, then remove the password on your user account.
