XP crashes when accessing secondary harddrive
My system had been randomly crashing and so I thought it was the ram. I replaced it and only connected my system harddrive and it worked. When I connected my other harddrives the system crashed again when I tried to access one of em. I have since tried them one at a time and found that when I try to access one of em, the system crashes. The harddrive that causes the crashes is a western digital. I have run Data lifeguard diagnostics (the western digital tool) and it says that it didn't find any errors.
Any ideas on what the problem with the drive could be or how I can get my data off of it? |

Please list system spec, make and model of all parts, including the psu.
How are the drives jumpered if they are ide? Have you tried different cables, and different ports?

As I was getting them my computer just shutdown. Not sure if this is related or not I've tried different cables and different port positions. I've taken cables that I know work and attached it to the problem harddrive and taken that cable (from the problem drive) and used it for my primary drive and found no problems. Thanks for the help. |

Your power supply is not suitable for that motherboard, it's not an ATX 2.x unit. It does not have enough amps on the +12v rail to support both PCI-E and that many hard drives.

Since I've unplugged the drive that was giving me trouble, my computer hasn't crashed. This leads me to believe that it is the harddrive that is somehow causing the problems. I probably don't know as much about these things as you, so I could be completely wrong. If that is the case, could you please recommend a power supply that I should use?
Thanks. |

Thanks. I picked it up at fry's today and just finished installing it. Hopefully this stops the crashes.

Thanks for the help. It has been running for a few days without any crashes. I plugged in the old harddrive and it went into disk check and it caused the computer to crash, so it was combination of the 2. I plan on running the western digital tools on it and/or sending it for repair.

Hard drives can't be repaired - only replaced.
