Win XP 64 will not boot, BSOD
Just as a reference I posted this thread:
Problems installing Windows XP 64 bit, Blue Screen of Death Been about 3 weeks with XP 64 corporate edition running fine, once I got the usb floppy. Tweaked my system out (i do audio recording) so i stripped down all the unnecessary services. including system restore (ouch). i come home tonight and find the computer in a nonstop loop of rebooting itself. after windows asks me how i want to proceed, because previous startup attempt failed, it goes to a blue screen then jumps immediately back to a reboot. unfortunately i did not go with the "do not reboot on error" option. the only part i can decipher from the bluescreen message is, "make sure you have adequete disk space" something to that effect. and thats about all it says. nothing below it. there are a couple lines above it, seem to be standard error message stuff. i cant see any error code, such as 0x000000 etc. (i tried every type of boot, safe modes, last known good config, normally... all of them give me the same blue screen.) i tried runnining memtest86+ and ramprobe 1.70 from boot cds. both programs come back with errors on every single tested sector of my ram. i have 2 4gb sticks of kingston. i tried booting from the same xp x64 disc that i installed on this computer. keep in mind i installed every windows update a couple weeks back. so i think i am running sp3 now on this system. in fact i am quite sure. the install disc i have is sp1. not sure if that matters. anyway so i tried running the setup from the xp x64 disc, again i loaded up the intel ich9r achi driver, because my hard drives are set at achi in bios. unlike the initial installion of xp 64, this time i have no luck. after i F6 and load up these drivers, i get to Setup Is Starting Windows... and i get a blue screen. this is what it says: Quote:
the F2 "automated system recovery" is not an option for me at the moment, as i do not have the ASR floppies that i need for that. first glance, i would say this is a RAM problem, or perhaps i have encountered a virus of some kind. obviously the ram testers say my ram is screwed. i am not aware of an antivirus i can run from a boot disc. if need be, i can write floppys or boot from a usb (i think i can boot from usb anyway) and i have a couple flash drives at the ready. i am about ready to have a heart attack with all the pc drama ive had lately. in fact im about ready to go mac. so please pull me back from the edge of the cliff and help me figure out *** is going on here lol. i appreciate all your help. |

I took the 2nd one out and it booted immediately. in bios i have it set to dual channel mode. i need at least 4 gb for my music recording and junk, i guess this is as good a time as any to move up to 8gb. my asus p5k-e board has 4 slots for memory, but i believe i have to keep the RAM spread over 2 sticks only to optimize the dual channel mode. i could be wrong on that tho, it is from memory. my next move? thanks a lot glc. |

ok, i was mistaken, the stick of ram i took out was from the A1 slot (this board has A1, A2, B1, B2)
system still booted fine as i said. then i switched the B1 stick to the A1 slot to make sure the slot works. and it does. currently running ramprobe 1.70 now everything appears fine. i have noticed my usb ports dont seem to be working after i boot up, or they are working erratically and somewhat randomly, but im not too worried about that righ tnow i always tried putting the stick i pulled first back in by itself, system crashed. so i have one bad 2gb stick Last edited by powpowmeow; 04-24-2009 at 05:12 PM. |

If it was sold as a dual channel kit, BOTH modules have to be returned.

You may also have a motherboard issue, but get a good set of ram in first.
