IE8 is now a Critical Update?

Haven't seen this one before. IE8 has been an optional download for a few weeks now. I just did a manual update on an XP repair install and found IE8 about to install as a Critical Update. This is bound to cause some issues and questions.

It's critical because IE has been losing market share to alternative browsers

In all seriousness, I did see a few weeks ago that MS did intend for IE8 to be distributed through windows update...but I would've thought it would be a non-critical like IE7 was.

I very much doubt IE8 or even IE19 is going to help them not lose market share

Most of my customers prefer Firefox and now Opera

Yeah, that showed up on my updates tonight. First thought was "Huh???? This isn't patch Tuesday!!". Then I saw what it was and had the same reaction as you, PR....wondering what was so "critical" about it. I already tried IE8 and it screwed with my system, so I just went to MS update and turned it off. Their site gave me the usual "OH NO, You've turned off a critical update!!! Go turn it back on!!" response, but I ignored it. Won't be installing it until it works with my system. Maybe never.

This morning we have had 5 computers so far dropped off for repair, we are also getting a lot of phone calls. They all have installed IE8 and now are running real slow, some are crashing when they are opening IE8, they are all either Dell or Compaq with older Intel chipsets so far, 845 and older.
