New folder appears after SP3

After I installed SP3 on my XP Pro computer a new folder appeared in the root. I has a 20 character name and branches first into another folder named "i386" which further branches into a folder named "update". The "update" folder contains a file named "update.log". What is the purpose of these folders?

The i386 folder holds the files used for Windows that install, repair, update, rebuild and modify.

Its usually recommended that you leave it alone.
