XP Installation Stalls
I am trying to install Windows XP Pro(includes Service Pck 3) from a CD onto a new system:
Asus P5Q SE Plus with a 40 Gig HD. This installation is stalling with a message: Copy Error. Setup cannot find the file XXXXXX.XX. Ensure that the 'Window's XP Service Pak 3 CD' is in the drive..... I tell it to cancel and it asks if I want to continue without the file, then it stalls after looking for the next file. I don't know where to point installer on the CD. Any clues? TIA.

Make sure the disk is clean and if cleaning doesn't fix it, try a different cd drive.

Only a 40 gig drive? Are you trying to use IDE drives on that board? If so, I recommend that you do not. The IDE controller is now an afterthought.

I'm using an IDE optical drive for the install but the HD is a SATA early model. The disk is real clean. Should I try a SATA optical drive? Sounds like what you guys are suggesting.
Thanks for the help. |

That will probably fix it.

If you set the SATA controller to AHCI, you need a driver on floppy. If you set it to native IDE, you won't. With an older SATA drive, there's no advantage to AHCI. The IDE controller is a JMicron, which is a POS.

Goofy stuff. I hooked up a SATA DVD Drive and tried installation, but it stops after formatting and says hard drive is configured incorrectly.
I went and bought a new SATA drive and will try that tonight or the weekend. |

What mode is your SATA controller running in?

The SATA controller is set to Enhanced (vs. Compatible), and IDE. Does that mean it's a bad drive?
I harvested this drive from an older setup, it had 2 partitions on it. I deleted those during setup and then created one partition and formatted it NTFS. I wonder if setup somehow screwed up this drive during that process... If I go with a new drive, should I set the controller to AHDI rather than IDE? |

Followup: Changing Storage configurations did not help with the 40 Gig Drive. Either it was bad at the start or I somehow borked it with the settings and stuff that I used. I've got to say that partitioning or deleting partitions is very confusing in XP setup.
Anyway. I installed a new drive and Windows installed without a hitch. I did not install AHCI because of hassle of floppy needed, etc. Just used the IDE and Compatible settings. Thanks for the help. |
