This is a 4 year old dell dimension with xp pro.
I got into safe mode but there is no taskbar at the bottom, no Start, only a few desktop icons, so I cant do anything. Tried a few times -same story. Thanks ! |

Is your mouse cursor visible and movable or is it locked up at that point? If not try pressing ctrl-alt-del and then click file and new task. Type systray into the box and see if the taskbar comes up.

Does using the Winkey on your keyboard bring up the start menu?
Might need to adjust the resolution to see the taskbar.

Thanks ! Yes , I have cursor. Tried adjusting the screen to see if the taskbar
had just slid below the monitor screen but its not that. No result from Winkey. Ctrl Alt Del - systray showed nothing, Ctrl ALt Del -explorer.exe has given me access to lots of areas and if necessary I can place some desktop shortcuts in normal mode and use those. Will re-post with results. Yes, there probably is some virus / malware -thats what I'm trying to get out. Appreciate your help- Google brought up nothing worthwhile. Why does PcMech hardly ever come up in searches on computer subjects ? Chris. |

Another Nuke and Pave.
Well, I got in but 'add/remove programs' doesn't work, neither does disk defragmenter,
and I ran two anti virus programs which came up with not even a cookie. Start menu does not have ' hide taskbar ' checked so its a corrupted Windows I guess, and I'lll have to go through another laborious nuke and pave job. Sincere thanks for all ideas. Cheers, Chris. |
