Hi gang
Has any one ever heard of a computer that you cannot get to go into Safe Mode.? I have tried the F8 several times and going through msconfig several times, this XP Home SP3 computer simply will not go into Safe Mode. Any suggestions.? Thanx...Gunny

Sometimes it's just a matter of timing when you hit the key, Gunny. I usually tap F8 repeatedly as soon as the splash screen comes up.

If you are saying that you can *select* it but it just won't get to the desktop, yes, I've seen that before and I don't know what causes it.
Ya know, Gunny - I've been sorta keeping tabs on all the issues you continually seem to be having - and I'm gonna give you some advice. First off, put 2 hard drives in your machine, use the first one only for the OS and software, and store ALL your data on the second one. Disconnect the data drive, and "nuke and pave" the OS drive. Reinstall everything and reconnect the data drive. When you get everything working and tweaked the way you like it, use Acronis True Image and create an image of the OS and apps drive, store it on the data drive. Next time things get all screwed up, simply restore the image. |

Hi GLC
Got the safe mode ok now, all in the timing. Thanx. Still did not work with the misconfig. Thanx for keeping tabs on my problems. I will put into practice your advice about the 2 HD's. That is a very smart idea. I sort of have done this with the computer I am having problems with right now. But as things progressed things got sort of screwed up. I have had this computer with the 2 HD's for 4 going on 5 years now. So in that length of time things have slowly gotten messed up. The HD that has my OP system on, is the one I cannot get Office to install. I cannot tell if there is something in the registry that should be there or something that is there and should not be. Like I said no error codes that I can work with, just saying the program has erred out, and cannot install. I would like to get this fixed before I move onto the thing you suggested. Thanx...Gunny |

Hi GLC
I know you all must be thinking, that I don't pay any attention to all your suggestions, that is not true. I would not come to this site for help if I did not think you all did not give great help, and most of the time solve problems, mine and others. It never ceases to amaze me how many problems you all solve. And you all do it because you love to help people with computer problems, you want to share your knowledge with others. That is some thing to be commended for. If I had this ability I would do the same. The hardest thing for me some times is understanding your instructions, some times you use phrases, and terms I am not familiar with. My hat is off to all you moderators, etc for the great job you all do. Thanx and take care.....Gunny |
