Hi, I have a 2.4 mgh Pentium 4 Dell Dimension Desktop running Windows XP Pro SP3 fully updated. It is 4 years old. The last week, the same thing has happened twice. The "found new hardware message pops up in the task bar and I get a message that Volume Snapshot hardware is trying to be installed (or Shadow Copy) and the installation failed --- but I am not trying to install any hardware and I don't know what Volume Snapshot or Shadow Copy even is????
Is this a sign my hard drive is about to fail or something??? Thanks for any help or ideas... |

2 more things:
1. It is definitely the "Found new Hardware wizard that tries to install something and fails. 2. The only program thing I have added to my system in the last month is "Carbonite" to back up, and it is still in the initial backup of the system (17% done). I have so much miusic that it is backing up about 2% a day (it says the initial backup will be SLOW... |

Thank you for those 2 articles. I had never heard of this before.
This VolumeSnapshot sounds like it is software buit into Windows...but I am getting the message that it is trying to install "hardware" called VolumeSnapshot, and it has failed. Why would it think it is installing hardware? This is very confusing, especially since I am doing nothing (except the system is at !8% for the carbonite backup). Sounds like they might be connected, as VolumeSnapsot has something to do with "backup", as does Carbonite... |

Did you try turning off Systaem Restore to see if that would stop the message from popping up?
You might be correct about the issue being Carbonie related. I had installed Data deposit Box for online backups and ran into some conflicts with the external hard drive that I also use for local backups. I had to set DDB so that it would not run while the external HD was backing up data. |
